Masaya Market, LLC was formed in 2006 through a vision inspired by my first mission trip to Nicaragua where I had the privilege of supporting a medical and dental mission team in the remote village of El Horno. Along with a team of 57 other missionaries, we set up a temporary clinic that treated over 4,000 patients from the most remote areas of Nicaragua.
It was an amazing opportunity to be immersed in the culture, the country and the people of Nicaragua. While it is economically the second poorest country in the Western Hemisphere, it is a country rich in natural beauty, in culture and in wonderful, beautiful people.
On the last day of our mission trip, we returned to Managua and the mission house where our journey had begun. In store for us was a real treat, a trip to the open-air market in the nearby town of Masaya… this is where the inspiration began. The market is a wonderful place where the air is filled with an aromatic potpourri of different foods being cooked and where just about any kind of merchandise is for sale from hardware to fresh produce.
Of particular interest to me were the locally handcrafted items. I love almost anything made from wood and discovered not only amazing woods such as Guapinol and Cocobolo but, a kind of unique and beautiful craftsmanship that I had not seen before. In addition, I came upon some of the most extraordinary ceramic pieces, which are stunning in both design and execution.
On the flight home, a couple of key thoughts came together in a vision. First, what a good, but short-lived, economic boost it was for the local artisans when our mission team showed up at the market. At the same time I was thinking about how I could raise money to support going back for a mission trip in 2007. Then it all came together… find a way to bring the products to North America, sustain the economic boost for the local artisans and allocate a portion of all sales to supporting future mission work. And so, Masaya Market, LLC was born.
We are a family owned business with the goal of making fine, hand crafted products available to our customers while supporting and providing an economic boost to our artisans. A portion of all sales is dedicated to our ongoing mission work in Nicaragua.
